Planting & Growing Red Romaine Lettuce Seeds
Red Romaine Lettuce grows well in cool weather and can be direct sown in the soil when the temperature reaches 35 degrees F. Please note however if the temperature rises above 75 degrees F the seeds become dormant. Plant Romaine Lettuce seeds 1/4" deep in rich soil and full sun. Lettuce plants should have a 12" spacing and 24" apart for rows. For a continuous crop of Red Romaine Lettuce, plant new seeds every 2 weeks.Growing
Remember lettuce has shallow roots so it’s very important to maintain adequate moisture in order to stay tender and sweet. A good rule of thumb is to add a good layer of mulch to conserve moisture, control weeds and it helps keep the temperature of the soil cooler.
Harvesting Romaine Lettuce
When harvesting lettuce it's always best to harvest in the morning. By doing so it helps retain its crisp sweetness. You have a few options when it comes to harvesting lettuce. You can harvest the whole plant or use the cut and grow method. As your Romaine lettuce grows, you can harvest leaves as needed by gently removing the leaves by pulling them off. You can also cut the plant leaving a few inches from the soil and the lettuce will begin to regrow from the center. You can harvest lettuce for most of the growing season until the main stem starts to grow. This is referred to as bolting. Once this happens the leaves will start to become bitter. As mentioned previously, for a continuous crop of Red Romaine Lettuce, plant new seeds every 2 weeks.
