Growing & Planting Mary Washington Asparagus Seeds
Germination:Soak seeds overnight to weaken the hard outer layer, then plant the seeds 1/2" deep in your seed tray. The temperature should be around 75-85 degrees F and germination should begin in 10-14 days if you’re planting your seeds indoors or in a greenhouse early. If you’re going to grow them directly in the ground, wait to do so after the last frost of spring.
Growing Asparagus:
After about 10-12 weeks after planting you can move your asparagus seedlings outdoor for planting. You are going to want to space the plants about 12" apart in rows 3-4' feet apart. Asparagus does best in sandy, well drained soil and full sun. As with most garden plants you want to keep the soil moist so apply a good layer of mulch which will also help keep the weeds down.
Mary Washington Asparagus is a perennial and it takes 60 days to maturity. 36-48" high with a spacing of 12". Mary Washington produces beautiful 8" asparagus spears. It is advised to only harvest after the second year of growth to give your asparagus plants time to get established. Some say even wait until the third year for serious harvesting. Start harvesting when the asparagus spears are a height of around 8".
