Snowball Self Blanching Cauliflower seeds is an early heirloom cauliflower variety. These cauliflower plants produces beautiful pure white cauliflower that ranges from 6-9 inches across. It's a delicious and great tasting variety to grow in the vegetable garden. What's also nice about this cauliflower variety is that it's self blanching meaning the leaves will wrap itself protecting it from the elements keeping it a pure white. As long as it's grown in cool conditions it will save you some work from tying the cauliflower leaves manually. Despite it's self blanching feature many growers will still tie the leaves up and around the head to protect it. It's best grown during cooler portions of the growing season. A nice tasty treat both eaten fresh or cooked. Excellent for veggie trays and dips. Ready to harvest in about 65-70 days.

SOWING:

For an early crop start seeds indoors 8-12 weeks before the last expected frost. Plant seeds 1/4" deep in peat pots so you do not disturb the plants roots come planting time. Be sure to harden off your seedlings several hours a day before transplanting so that they may get used to the outdoor weather. Plant seedlings 16"-18" apart in rows 36" apart about 2 weeks before the last expected spring frost. Cauliflower grows best in temperatures between 60-70 degrees F. Plant more seeds midsummer for a fall crop.

Keep soil moist and enriched with compost. Applying mulch helps to regulate soil temperature, maintain moisture and control weeds. No tying is required for this variety if grown in cooler conditions however many growers still tie the leaves up and around the head to protect it.

HARVESTING:

Harvest the heads of cauliflower when it still feels firm and tight. Simply cut them off at the base of the plant with a sharp knife. Mature cauliflower heads can grow to 6-12" in diameter given proper care. Excellent eating fresh or cooked and they freeze very well too.
