Straight Eight Cucumber seeds is a popular cucumber variety to grow in the home garden. Just as its name tells you it grows delicious straight cucumbers about 8" long. These cucumbers are dark green with smooth skin and great for slicing. Excellent for fresh eating and pickling. A vigorous growing cucumber variety that will provide a continuous yield all summer long. You can also grow cucumber plants using a trellis as well. Ready to harvest in about 60 days.

STRAIGHT EIGHT CUCUMBER SEEDS - GROWING CUCUMBER PLANTS FROM SEED

SOWING:

Start your Straight Eight Cucumber plants indoors about 2 weeks before your last frost. Since cucumbers do not take well to transplanting either start seeds in peat pots indoors or plant them directly outdoors after danger of last frost. For indoors plant 3-4 cucumber seeds 1/2" deep in your peat pots. Keep the temperature at 80 degrees F until germination. Be sure to provide adequate lighting for germination and for growing by placing the growing trays near a sunny window or using a grow light. As your seedlings begin to grow and have two or three leaves on each plant, cut off all but the strongest plant.

A week before transplanting the seedlings outside you need to begin to harden off the plants. They need to get used to the outside weather gradually. To be safe wait at least a week or two after the final frost to be on the safe side before transplanting your cucumber plants in the vegetable garden. The air temperature should be a consistent 65-75 degrees F.

For direct planting, plant 7-8 seeds in each hill with 4-5' spacing between hills. Cucumbers love heat so be sure to cover your plants if there is a risk of frost. Cucumber plants cannot tolerate even a slight frost. If you'd prefer planting cucumber plants in rows, plant seedlings 1' apart or 4-5 seeds within 1' and thin later.

GROWING STRAIGHT EIGHT CUCUMBERS

When growing cucumbers you can also provide a trellis since cucumber plants love to climb. By doing so it saves space, they're easier to pick and it grows straighter cucumbers. It's not required but is beneficial. To grow beautiful, delicious cucumbers it's important to maintain moisture in the soil. Keep the soil consistently moist. One of the easiest ways to control moisture is by applying mulch. It also controls weeds too.

HARVESTING:

For best taste harvest your cucumbers as soon as they reach a length of 8". Be sure to also pick cucumbers consistently which helps improve a continuous yield all summer long.
