Growing Haskap Plants
Planting
When planting haskap plants they grow best in full sun in rich moist soil with good drainage. Prepare your soil in advance by adding some compost. Plant your plants in a location where they will get at least 6 hours of full sun. It's recommended to plant them 4-5 feet apart if you wish to have individual bushes. For gardeners wishing to create a hedge row plant them 3 feet apart. Haskaps do very well in a wide range of soil types and pH ranging from 5-8. They are very easy to grow with little maintenance required. Once established the plants are pretty self sufficient.
During the growing season apply mulch around the plants to maintain moisture and control weeds. To keep your haskaps well fed and growing fertilize your plants with an all purpose fruit and berry granular fertilizer once a month beginning in May. Fertilize no later then mid August to allow plants time to prepare for winter.
Harvesting
Haskap bushes take 2-3 years before fruiting begins. On year 2-3 they'll start producing an abundance of honeyberries. One bush can produce up to 10 pounds or more of haskaps per plant. Flowering begins in April to May with berries ripening by June. Please also note it's not only you that love fresh honeyberries, the birds do too.. It may be necessary to cover your plants with netting to protect the fruit from the birds.
