SOWING:

Direct sow seeds outside in early spring. Plant seeds 10-12" apart and about 1/4" below the soil. Rows should be spaced about 24" apart. With succession planting you can enjoy harvests all summer long. Lettuce grow well in cool weather.

It is best to harvest your lettuce in the morning as this helps retain its crisp sweetness. Simply cut the entire plant when mature just above the soil surface. You can also do the cut and come again method. you can take a few leaves at a time or all of them at once. The plant will regrow those leaves giving you a continuous harvest. You'll be able to use this method until the plant bolts, at that time the leaves will grow bitter. Lettuce taste best when fresh, but keeps well in the refrigerator for up to a week.
