- Sow seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before last frost date
- Plant seeds about ¼” under the soil in pots or cell seed starting trays.
- The soil temperature must be at least 70 degrees F in order for the seeds to germinate.
- Place your pots or seed trays in a warm sunny area, by a window or under growing lights for the best and fastest results.
- If starting pepper seeds in pots, plant 3 seeds to a pot if you like. As they begin to grow thin out the weakest seedling, leaving two pepper plants to grow. By growing two plants together helps against sunscald as the leaves of the two plants help protect the peppers from the intense direct sunlight. It's also known to help improve the yield. You could get more peppers from two plants growing as one instead of individual plants.
- Harden off your pepper plants about 10 days before transplanting in your garden.
- While your hardening off your plants, ensure that your garden soil is ready for planting by introducing fertilizer or aged compost.
- After the danger of frost has passed, transplant seedlings outdoors 18"-24" inches apart and 24"-36" between rows. Please ensure the soil is at least 65 degrees F as peppers will not survive transplanting temps any colder. You can also warm up your soil by using a black plastic which also helps prevent weeds too.
- Enjoy eating fresh peppers in about 75 days
- Soil should be well-drained, but maintain adequate moisture either with mulch or plastic covering.
- Water one to two inches per week, but remember peppers are extremely heat sensitive. If you live in a warm or desert climate, watering everyday may be necessary.
- Fertilize after the first fruit set.
- Weed carefully around plants.
- If necessary, support your pepper plants with cages or stakes to prevent bending. You can use those cone-shaped wire tomato cages if you like or simply use some stakes and tie your plants to it.
- For larger peppers, spray the plants with a solution of one tablespoon of Epsom salts in a gallon of water, once when it begins to bloom, and once ten days later.
