American Purple Top Rutabaga Seeds

Grow some delicious American Purple Top Rutabaga from seeds this summer in your vegetable garden. They are very easy to grow. Produces large, round yellow roots with a purple crown. Rutabagas are firm, sweet and when also cooked turns to a vibrant golden colour. Turnips are quite similar to Rutabagas as they are in the same family however when cooked they remain white and have a sharper flavour. Rutabagas are also sweeter then turnips. This variety is excellent for winter storage. American Purple Top Rutabaga are ready to harvest in about 90 days.

Growing American Purple Top Rutabaga

Planting Seeds

Direct sow seeds outside in early spring in rich soil. They can also be fall planted as well. Plant seeds about 4" apart and 1/4" under the soil surface. Can sow seeds closer, then thin later. Rows should be spaced at 12"-24" between rows.

Lastly apply a generous amount of mulch to conserve moisture and control weeds during the growing season.

Harvesting

After a few heavy frosts, pull or dig up your rutabagas and cut the tops down to an inch. Rutabagas can be stored up to 6 months in a dark cool place or refrigerator.
