Growing Detroit Dark Red Beets
After germination you may need to thin the plants as they should be 3"-4" apart for optimal growth. When weeding be careful not to disturb the growing plants. Beets are a cool weather crop and grows well in cooler weather. Keeping the soil moist will therefore ensure a healthy and productive crop. Lastly apply mulch to help regulate soil temperature, maintain moisture and control weeds.
HARVESTING:
For the best taste, flavour and tenderness, harvest your beets when they are between 1"-3" in diameter. When harvesting twist off the tops about 1" up the stem to prevent the beets from bleeding. The green tops can also be harvested and used as salad greens. You can harvest a little off each plant without damaging it. Detroit dark Red Beets store well for later use.
